This is when early adopting can really bite you in the ass. Especially when I know HD-DVD is more versatile format (its even got versatile in the name, how cool is that!!). But if you think about it, it was a lost cause from the get go. Sony and their camp had no option but to win, and they certainly had the means to do so this time around. They banked their whole Playstation franchise on the thought that they could muscle their format to the top with a little help from Sony pictures and of course, Michael Bay and his famous HD conspiracy theory. But Sony's brand of force feeding certainly seemed to work...Though, not to give them too much credit, they are still 1-2 overall (RIP Betamax and MiniDisc). Did I mention I was a proud owner of MiniDisc?? The question I'm asking myself now is why did I buy in to this bullshit in the first place. The so called 'war' was certainly not in my or any other consumers best interest to participate in. Yet we all do it time and time again...maybe its simply our competitive need to choose sides, or the age old "my dick is bigger than yours" that gets us all riled up (mine is btw). But then I think, none of this will really matter anyway. The fatter my Internet pipe gets and the bigger my hard drive's are, the less want or need I will have for a factory stamped disc that collects dust on my bookshelf. Though I still have some affection for those round shiny disc's, so its gonna be a hard habit to kick.

Wired has an article that Multiverse (unknown to me) has acquired the rights to a Firefly based MMORPG! This is great news for all browncoats hoping to keep the Firefly universe alive! Maybe they will even secure some of the original actors for voicing some of the in-game quests? They didn't mention an ETA in their press release, but my best guess is Q1 of 08.

The death of Sci-Fi

Are the executives as the Sci-Fi channel taking crazy pills??? Not only are they cancelling one of the greatest and longest running sci-fi shows of all time, Stargate SG1, but they are going to be changing the name of the channel to SurgeTV? They say the change is due to the popularity of ECW wrestling and the fact that the channel demographic is changing... well, hmm... maybe its because you put a badly acted wrestling soap opera on a sci-fi channel! First they destroy TechTV, now their taking down Sci-Fi channel... I say death to all network tv! Viva la Podcast!!!

I'm really getting sick of hearing about this crap. Who gives a *** if the theatres are unhappy about so called early dvd releases. The fact is, things have to change. If you want me to come to the theatre and watch a, usually shitty, movie, then don't charge me 9 bucks for a ticket, 4 bucks for a drink and then bombard me with 20-30 minutes of commercials and previews before the movie even starts! If your products sucks, having the dvd come out in 4 months instead of 6 will not change a thing. I say abolish the theatre monopoly and let the consumer decide. If I think V for Vendetta in IMAX is worth the 10 bucks (which it is), then I'll go to the theatre, If not, I'll throw it in my netflix queue and watch in on my ridiculous expensive home theatre system with a beer in my hand. common sense + money and time saved = crazy logical.

I just listened to the new Yellowcard album for the first time today and noticed a song titled "Martin Sheen or JFK"...the hook even has dialog from that scene in the movie. Quality reference for us hardcore Goonies fans!

Stoneage Jackass was something us board programmers came up with one afternoon several years ago while toying with our mini dv cameras. They're all themed in the spirit of MTV's jackass and named after our former employer Stoneage corp. Anyway, we just started publishing them to Google video and the first one just went live today. From what I've seen so far, the new iPod video is pretty damn cool. Its ability to play QuickTime video looks very impressive, though small, as suggested the various hardware reviews thus far. Also, the size and the style of the player have still gone unmatched by it competitors, which still astonishes me...but all of that is still not enough for me to fork over 300 bucks. As always, the biggest flaw of this awesome gadget, is that it locks you in a proprietary nightmare from which there is no escape. As of now, the only supported format on the iPod for leased audio and video content is their proprietary fairplay drm. Now, I've heard some say that this is very similar to Microsoft Windows Media drm, and for the most part it is; but the one major difference is that Microsoft licenses their format to other hardware manufacturers! I would imagine that, as an employee of Apple, you would get fired for even thinking the word 'licensing' within a 10 mile radius of their headquarters. I just don't get how they have all of these consumers bought in to their evil plan of control on downloadable media. Why would you pay for a song that you don't even own? for .99 cents you can play it on 4 computers (with iTunes only), an iPod, and burn it to cd a couple of times...now thats just fucking crazy. You are, in fact, leasing the content, not buying, as the iTunes store would have you believe. The only leasing model that makes sense to me is the one that Napster, Rhapsody, and Yahoo have adopted. That is to pay one flat monthly rate for access to their entire library of music which can be downloaded and transfered to any supported portable device (at least a dozen or more from different manufactures) for as long as you subscription remains active. So, 'owning music', has now been reduced to having the ability to burn the song to cd a few times...and music is just the tip of the iceburg on this drm nonsense. The real wake up call for these trapped consumers will be when the next 'must have' portable media gadget comes out thats not made by apple, then they may finally realize that they are fucking screwed. "Consumer: Hello, Apple...how can I copy my 2,000 purchased songs the my new Creative Super Wookie player?....Apple: muuuhahahahahaha, click!
