  • The remodel/updating begins

I just posted several new photos and videos of some of the demo and cleanup we started doing at the new house. To my surprise, we actually gutted enough stuff to completely fill up a 30 yard construction dumpster! Check em' out

  • Twig and Berries

We just recently found out that Hayley and I will be having a boy. I was fine either way, but I know Hayley was relieved because she believes a boy will be easier to handle. I'm not so sure on that one, but I'll go with that theory until I find out otherwise firsthand. The baby is still due the first week of October as of the last update, so I only have 4 months left to squeeze in the rest of my life's ambitions...no sweat ;)

  • Wii don't care about winning

It must be frosty in hell and there will be a shortage on bacon this summer because pigs have definitely taken flight. I dont' believe for a second that Nintendo is in the console business for the fun of it. If they didn't want to take out Xbox, then why thow all of that r&d into designing a totally new gaming interface? I say that nintendo is in it to win it, so we'll see if they change their tune once consoles start flying off the shelves. My prediction is that the Wii will outsell both the 360 and the PS3 this fall in the US & Europe, but Xbox will be the champ in the long run. It will be hard for the other consoles to compete with Live Anywhere, especially once vista hits the shelves.

  • Windows Media 11 Beta

I don't know if iTunes has anything to worry about, but I do think they should just plug their music store directly in to Windows Media player (like Napster, MusicMatch, etc) instead of making people download their stand-alone app... The same goes for the Yahoo Music Engine. Having music store variety is great, but having multiple music libraries is a pain in the ass. And, out of all of the apps, (YME, iTunes, MMJB) I think WMP 11 has it right.

Anyway, check out the WMP 11 beta, which I believe starts tomorrow publicly along with their new MTV joint venture URGE; I know you wont be disappointed with the player, but I cant vouch for URGE because I haven't used it yet. I do know it will cost the same as Rhapsody and Napster so I'll most likely have to pass...you just can't beat Yahoo at 60 bucks a year.

  • VoIP woes

Well, in an effort to save some monthly cash, I opted to switch from my current VoIP provider, Vonage, to a relatively new company called Sunrocket. On paper, the switch looked like a no-brainer; Sunrocket offers an unlimited 12 month plan with 2 incoming numbers for only $199 bucks (includes taxes). Now that beats vonage by just over 200 dollars a year based on comparable features, so you would be stupid not to switch...right? Wrong...After about 2 weeks of experiencing major technical issues, I was forced to cancel. Not only were the incoming calls nearly inaudible, but several of their advertised features didn't even work properly. For example, the free signature number they give you did not even show caller id or function at all when forwarding was enabled. Technical issues like those, seemed insurmountable, even to their highest level of technicians...so, heed my warnings, an don't take service reliability for granted... for some reason, hearing every word vs. every other seems to make quite a difference in a phone conversation ;)

  • Moving to the GP

In about 4 weeks Hayley and I will be leaving our condo in The Clem and moving to our new house in Grosse Pointe Park. Though I've said many times that I would never live in Grosse Pointe, I have to admit the houses there are pretty hard to match. The most enticing feature for me, after we began looking at these old houses, was their accessible 3rd level attic areas. And when I say accessible, I mean and actual door and staircase which lead up to 1 or more finished or unfinished rooms. Our new house has 1 finished room (10x14) and 1 unfinished on the 3 floor, which had me hooked right away. Now, to those who are familiar or who grew up in old houses, this may seem like nothing special; but, to those, like myself, who grew up in relatively new home or in the modern suburbs, having an accessible 3rd level is a whole new experience. For Hayley and I in particular, it has the unique benefit of allowing us to keep our home office (we both work from home) separate and on its own floor. 3rd level aside though, the house has many other cool amenities common to old homes, such as 80 year old red oak floors throughout, leaded glass windows on the exterior of the house as well as many of the doors in the home (most of these old houses have 1 or more doors for every room in the house), plaster walls, and radiator heat throughout.

Now, with that said, all that charm definitely comes at a price ;). Over the coming months I will be posting some details on the various projects I have planed to make the house more energy efficient and retrofitting it for a high tech and gadget lifestyle. Should be fun!
