Chris Kirby's Inner Monolog

January 2005 - Posts

  • Nor'lans

Off to New Orleans and the NADA conference in the morning, which, evidently is quite the deal in the automotive dealership world. This will be my first trip to the conference and to the big easy, so the combo should make for an interesting experience. Its not quite Mardi Gras yet, but I'll be passing out beads just in case.

I'm sure Hayley will take more pictures than any one human can view in a sitting, but I'll be sure pick a few interesting ones and post them.

  • Finally, easy to use email encryption

I was going through my daily rss feed infusion and came across a great product called Ciphire. Its an easy to use and implement email encryption and identity solution. To make this all nice and painless, the program sits between your mail client and the mail server allowing it to transparently encrypt/decrypt messages on the fly.

With those features, it had me at encryption. I installed it about an hour ago and had it up and running with all my active email addresses in a matter of minutes. All that's left is to test it with someone else using the client. Good riddance to those buggy email certificates (at least with outlook).

The product is currently in public beta with a release expected shortly. You can grab it at https://www.ciphire.com/

  • Cool, but probably not practical.

The Mac Mini: Less Than You Think
    By Extremetech

When this was first announced i though I'd finally found my new toy, but once the excitement wore off, I realized that you really weren't getting a whole lot for your money.

At fist glance I though that this would be a great media center PC due to its form factor and dvi output, but once you add wireless connectivity (bluetooth & 802.11), wireless peripherals (keyboard, mouse), a super-drive, and finally more memory and storage, you get a small computer with a much larger price tag (around $950  for the 1.25 ghz model w/o display). Still not horrible for a Mac in the living room, but when compared to other wintel offerings in similar form factors, it just doesn't stack up as a viable solution for the living room or for Grandma.

I'm not saying I won't buy one ;), I'm just saying its not as cool as I thought. For most people looking for an alternative, I would stick to the 17 inch iMac.

  • I want my beta 2!

Haven't heard much buzz on vs 2005 lately. I've been holding off on several projects in hopes of a q4 or an early q1 release but I'm starting to lose hope as the weeks go buy.

  • Cool WoW screen shot

    Check it out here.
